Our Purpose The purpose of the Shuswap Hospital Foundation is to accept, manage and disburse funds and properties to the benefit of Shuswap Health Services. This entity includes Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Bastion Place, (a residential care facility) and Community Care Services. Funds are used to help meet the need for priority equipment and facilities that will enhance the care of patients and residents of these health care facilities and services. All investments and property are held in trust. Our History The original foundation was formed in 1986 as the Shuswap Lake General Hospital Endowment Foundation Society. In 1990 a major fund raising campaign was organized to help raise $300,000 to assist in equipping the then 100 bed Bastion Place. In 1993 three health care societies of the Shuswap were amalgamated. This brought together the Shuswap Lake General Hospital Society, the Pioneer Lodge Society and the Home Support Services Society. With this amalgamation the society name was changed to the Shuswap Lake Health Care Foundation Society with a mandate to support the Shuswap Lake General Hospital.

In 2006 the foundation adopted another name change to “Shuswap Hospital Foundation” to more readily identify the foundation with its function as fundraiser and support to the Shuswap Lake General Hospital and associated services. Like other hospital foundations, our role today is increasingly more significant, as health care costs rise and the demands on the system grow, along with population and demographic changes in the area.
Between 1986 and 2006, over $1.5 million was raised from various community wide campaigns. There is an increasing reliance on the generosity of the citizens and business leaders of our community to maintain the highest standards of health care in our region.

The year since the last AGM has been packed with some wonderful events. Seeing the completion of the hospital upgrade and expansion was beyond doubt a milestone for the hospital, the foundation and the community. After the many months of disruption, unpleasant noise levels, and constant rearranging of routes to reach desired services the final product was delivered in the spring of 2010. It was certainly worth the wait. The Foundation is proud of the part it played in the process.
It was particularly exciting to see the arrival and installation of the CT Scanner in the late summer of 2009, and its installation in the new area of the hospital. The Foundation acknowledges the cooperation of the North Okanagan Shuswap Regional Hospital District with funding. We are happy that with the cooperation of the community we raised the $1.5 million for our share of the equipment and for a full service agreement to assure the machine will be available in top condition for patients over the years.
We are proud to have been included in the official opening event staged by Interior Health. We were equally elated to be able to stage official unveiling ceremonies the following day for our recognition walls and to have the opportunity to thank the community for their generosity and support in providing funding for much of the state of the art equipment and furnishings. This will assist in providing excellence in care for patients at the hospital. The unveilings were carried out by centenarian Clara Johnston, who was an active Hospital Auxiliary member for many years, assisted by Town Crier Patrick Allwood. Special recognition was given that day to individuals and groups who sponsored specific rooms in the hospital expansion. Abbreviated tours were provided to those guests so requesting. Comments received were very positive from guests who viewed the donor recognition wall with its salmon run motif.
